This professional development program provides an introduction to Echoes and Reflections, allowing time for educators to explore the standards-based print and digital resources available to help today’s students study the Holocaust in a manner that stimulates engagement and critical thinking. The focus of this program will be on the materials and instructional strategies available in Echoes and Reflections and IWitness to effectively teach Elie Wiesel’s Night as well as additional background on the memoir that teachers can integrate into their instruction.
Program Goals
- To familiarize participants with the content and pedagogy of Echoes and Reflections through experiential activities.
- To enhance teacher knowledge about the Holocaust.
- To explore Echoes and Reflections multimedia assets including the correlated visual history testimonies and other primary resources and materials.
- To introduce participants to IWitness, an online complement to Echoes and Reflections that includes interactive student-centered activities that align with the lessons.
Participants will explore the following:
- History of anti-semitism and the ghettos for context prior to teaching Night.
- Interdisciplinary materials including art work, photographs, poetry, and personal narratives for teaching about the "Final Solution."
- Significant themes of the memoir and additional resources to support the teaching of the text.
