This workshop will provide free material to meet California's state vision for environmental literacy. The California Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) was approved by the State Board of Education in 2010, and was developed to integrate environmental education into the K-12 science and social science curriculum. The EEI curriculum is aligned to the California Standards and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) which develops literacy skills by including the use of informational text. There are over 85 units that are available for free. RCOE is sponsoring this hands-on workshop which includes additional resources to support the implementation of literacy lessons that meet the ELA/ELD content standards.
This workshop will focus on how to gain access to these science and social studies units that support ELA/ELD content standards. By attending this session you will gain access to obtain various grade level units. The Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) curriculum teaches to mastery select K-12 California academic content standards in science and history-social science, using the environment as a context for learning. Through your commitment to increase environmental literacy, we can help students become critical thinkers, informed decision makers, and leaders for the future.
The curriculum was created through a coordination and collaboration between the California Environmental Protection Agency, the California Department of Education, the State Board of Education, and the California Natural Resources Agency.
Each unit is intended to do the following:
- Replace old lessons with new, up-to-date materials to engage your students in topics that matter to them: the air they breathe, the water they drink, the food they eat.
- Cultivate your students’ understanding of their relationship with the environment.
- Make learning relevant and fun!
- Prepare your students to be critical thinkers and 21st century problem solvers.
- Encourage your students to be responsible stewards of the earth.
- Teach history-social science and science standards to mastery, and support California ELA/ELD content standards.
