Each spring, all grade eleven students in California take the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics. These assessments, which are administered as part of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System, also serve as an indicator of readiness for college-level coursework and are used by the California State University (CSU) and participating California Community Colleges (CCCs) to determine Early Assessment Program (EAP) status and identify students in need of additional instruction to help them meet the proficiency requirements of college English courses.
Aligned with the California Standards for English language arts and literacy, the Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) emphasizes in-depth reading and writing of expository, analytical, and argumentative texts in a variety of genres. The ERWC was collaboratively developed by a group of CSU faculty, high school teachers, and high school administrators. Likewise this four-day professional learning workshop is presented by CSU faculty and Riverside County secondary English teachers.
The four-day professional learning workshop series introduces high school English teachers to the ERWC materials and familiarizes them with the ERWC's integrated approach to rhetorical reading and writing. As part of the workshop, teachers will receive professional reference books as well as binders containing the 12 modules comprising the full course for grade 12. In addition, four supplementary modules per grade for 9-11 are also now available and those teachers attending the high school workshop series will automatically receive access to the grades 9-11 materials.
