The National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) recently convened a national panel of teachers and administrators to collaboratively and transparently examine research on professional ethics both within and outside of the field of education. The panel learned that most professions have a strong set of principles to guide decision-making for their fields; in fact, all other fiduciary professions have articulated clear guidelines for professional ethics. However, the education profession has not adopted
a model code of ethics, resulting in 50 separate measures of what constitutes misconduct by professional, certified educators across the U.S. Given that reality, the panel developed a draft of the Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE), vetted it across multiple organizational partners and posted it for public comment. In 2015, the final MCEE document was adopted by the NASDTEC Board of Directors and widely disseminated.
The Riverside County Office of Education believes that the MCEE should be promoted in its educator preparation programs, and has integrated it into the Preliminary and Clear Administrative Services Credential programs.
The goal is to enhance the ability of the education profession, especially in California, to establish for itself the baseline behaviors that society can and should expect of professional educators and indeed what a practitioner can and should expect of him or herself.
