(3 Day Event) Jan 15, 2019 - Apr 12, 2019
Research shows that the way the math practices ask students to engage in doing math actually creates opportunities for all math learners, in particular students with learning differences and emergent bilinguals (also known as English learners). This two-day session is intended for educators who have made a commitment to equity and access and want to advance equity and access in their classroom by creating a mathematics discourse community. Participants will engage in mathematical routines designed to develop mathematical reasoning ability described in the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice. These routines will support emergent bilinguals and students with learning differences. Teams are welcome to attend in order to work towards a common understanding of how to use the Standards for Mathematical Practice, which are assessed on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) through Claims 1, 2, 3, and 4, to build students' agency and change how students learn mathematics. Each participant will receive the book: Routines for Reasoning: Fostering the Mathematical Practices in All Students.
Note: An optional third day is available for participants to further explore ideas discussed during the two-day session. The agenda for the third day will be guided by participants.
