Communication: Communication Skills and Autism Spectrum Disorders

This course introduces participants to the basic principles of Positive Behavior Support. State and federal regulations regarding behavioral interventions will be presented. In students with autism, challenging behaviors need to be considered relative to a student's repertoire of verbal and nonverbal communicative behaviors. There is strong empirical support for the efficacy of particular communication approaches and strategies to replace challenging behaviors. Participants will be introduced to strategies to address core communication deficits using visual representation systems, including Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).

This training applies towards the Certificate in the Education of Students with Autism (CESA) program offered through Region 10 Coordinating Council in partnership with University of California, Riverside Extension. For an additional fee, and with the completion of the assigned follow-up activities, participants may earn university credit towards the certificate.
