For centuries, schools worked well for those students who arrived ready to learn. When students struggled, they were often labeled as disabled - yet research is now clear that it is not students who are disabled. Our systems are disabled. Although deconstructing our systems may seem like a monumental task, it is critical for our administrators to use a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) built on a foundation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to meet the needs of both students and educators. In this universally designed session, participants will have numerous options and choices to dive into the why, the what, and most importantly, the how of multi-tiered systems of support and UDL, so administrators can eliminate systemic barriers and support and challenge all students academically, behaviorally, and social-emotionally. It’s a mash-up of MTSS and UDL that will provide both inspiration and next steps to design a system that fits everyone.

Katie Novak is an internationally renowned education consultant as well a practicing leader in education as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Massachusetts. With 15 years of experience in teaching and administration and an earned doctorate in curriculum and teaching, Katie designs and presents workshops both nationally and internationally focusing on implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), multi-tiered systems of support, and universally designed leadership.
