Over two decades of research has informed us that reading and writing skills are obtained only through a sustained, instructional focus on comprehension and vocabulary development taught through authentic texts and learning tasks. This workshop explains and demonstrates how teachers from every discipline/content area can and must facilitate the work of speaking, listening, reading and writing via relevant yet rigorous texts and tasks. Participants will experience various learning tasks as if they were the students in order to help illustrate how engaging and "real" learning experiences can be in our classrooms. Those who attend will walk away better prepared to engineer such experiences for students and lead others to do the same.
