Honoring district and countywide awardees for administrator, teacher, para-educator, support personnel, parent/volunteer, and student teacher for their contribution to the advancement of academic achievement for English learners. 

 

Student scholarship award recipients will be honored. Show your pride by wearing attire representing various cultures (encouraged, but not required).

Opportunity drawing for gift baskets and other extraordinary items available. All proceeds go to CABE, Riverside Chapter, Scholarship Fund.

Our Bilingual Educators Succeeding Together (BEST) Awards Ceremony is held once a year to honor district and countywide awardees for administrator, teacher, para-educator, support personnel, and parent/volunteer for their contribution to the advancement of academic achievement for English learners. The BEST Committee is in charge of planning this ceremony which usually takes place in the spring. Committee members volunteer to take on the required responsibilities for that year. Any district English learner representative is welcome to join the BEST committee.

Long-Term English Learner (LTEL) Focus Group and Task Force Meetings

The Long-Term English Learner (LTEL) Focus Group and Task Force will hold five meetings this year during which leadership, legislation, research, and best practices are presented to assist long-term English learners, those who have been enrolled in U.S. schools for six years or more who have not yet reached English proficiency as measured by the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). The mission of the LTEL Task Force is to identify sustainable systems from the county level to the classroom that support best practices in meeting linguistic and academic needs of ELs, LTELs, and RTELs to prepare them for graduation from high school well prepared for college and the workforce.

Project and English Learner Directors (PELD) Meetings 2017-2018

These meetings are for district-level categorical, project and English learner directors and coordinators who oversee federal and state education projects including services for English learners (ELs).  Directors and specialists will share expertise about federal and state programs and legislation, funding, regulations, assessment and accountability, Federal Program Monitoring (FPM), and Title III monitoring.  Topics for discussion include state and federal accountability and continuous system, alignment of state and federal plans and programs, and support for student groups with a specific focus on English learners.

High School Principal Learning Network

The High School Principal Network will meet six times during the school year, with the goal being to share best practices, increase all metrics related to the 8 State Priority areas, with an emphasis on college/career readiness.  The principals will be encouraged to bring up to two key leaders on their campuses to the network meetings.  Participating principals will be also engaged in learning walks on each other’s campuses.  Specific goals include increasing the percentage of students applying to three or more colleges, increasing the percentage of FAFSA/Dream Act completions from 64% to 93% through school years 18-19, increasing the percentage of students enrolling in postsecondary education from 52% to 65%, and decreasing the amount of students needing remediation upon entering college. To increase college access, the network will incorporate strategies such as professional development opportunities for high school counselors on FAFSA/Dream Act preparation and completion, and the integration of FAFSA/Dream Act completion into school curriculum.

Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) for Middle School

This 18-hour workshop series is intended for middle school teachers as an introduction to the CSU Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) for grades six, seven, and eight.  The workshops are generally three days scheduled over several months, aligned with the California Standards for English language arts and literacy, the course emphasizes the in-depth study of expository, analytical, and argumentative reading and writing.

During this three-day course, teachers will: 

  • Understand the ways in which ERWC methodology and materials are aligned to the California Standards.
  • Learn how to integrate the middle school modules as part of their own course curriculum.
  • Learn to engage students in building the crucial literacy skills they need to succeed in college and careers.
  • Acquire knowledge of what it means to read and write rhetorically and the ways in which this approach promotes career and college readiness at the middle school level.

The three-day course includes:

  • Access to ERWC materials for grades six, seven, and eight.
  • Theoretical understanding of ERWC.
  • Module outlines for teachers and students. 
  • Strategies for using course materials.

Implementing SANDI and FAST Parts 1-4

This is a three-day four-part series for the Student Annual Needs Determination Inventory (SANDI) and Formative Assessment of Standards Tasks (FAST) Online assessment program for students with intellectual disabilities.  This series is designed to provide training and direct support for the full implementation of SANDI/FAST to teachers using the assessments.  We recommend that participants attend the full series (all three days).

  • Parts one and two will include SANDI administration and calibration, SANDI Quick Start, navigating the online system, an overview of the new Instructional Planning Protocol and the SANDI IEP preparation component.
  • Part three will consist of analyzing SANDI and FAST Benchmark 1 data and integrating the Performance Items by Level (PIL) Chart with the Instructional Planning Protocol.
  • Part four will include analyzing FAST Benchmark 2 data, deeper application of the PIL Chart and Instructional Planning Protocol to inform instructional groups, lesson planning, and the master schedule.

Participants must be from agencies currently enrolled in the SANDI/FAST Online assessment program.  No registration for Riverside County agencies using the SANDI/FAST Online.

Each meeting's agenda will be built by your questions, and our time will be spent collaboratively discussing these questions. This will be a problem-solving group. Bring your own lunch for our final hour where we will be sharing best practices and learnings from across the county.

Our California Mathematics Standards provide guidance and direction, and help focus and clarify common outcomes.  But these standards do not tell teachers, coaches, and other leaders what to do at the classroom, school, or district level or how to begin making essential changes to implement the standards.  During our Mathematics Teacher Leader Network Meetings, we will explore the best research-based practices that promote college and career readiness for all of our TK-12 grade students.  We will continue to have the latest updates from California Department of Education (CDE) and California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), and there will be time for informal collaboration with colleagues.
