Developing an Understanding of Place Value, Grades K-3 (Part One)

Event Date(s) May 08, 2018 - May 09, 2018
The development of a deep understanding of place value is a long journey for children, beginning with the noticing of patterns in the number system as they count and group quantities, to the discovery that the place of the numeral implies its worth, to additive decomposition using expanded notation, to working with decimals and eventually developing an understanding of the multiplicative nature and ultimate beauty of our place value number system.

In this two-part series, which can be taken either separately or together, we will deepen our own understanding of the base ten system, engage in an examination of the big ideas, strategies, and models important for an understanding of place value, and build a landscape of learning (a learning trajectory) for use in planning investigations, conferring, and facilitating and structuring congresses.  Part One is designed for K-3 grade level teachers.  Part Two is designed for 4-8 grade level teachers.  Each participant will receive a Context for Learning Mathematics (CFLM) Place Value unit of their choice.

In Part One participants will:
  • Explore the early ideas about place value that children generate as they count and group quantities and reflect on patterns they see in our number system.
  • Engage in analysis of videos of children at work on the investigations in the Context for Learning (CFLM) unit Organizing and Collecting, grades K-1.
  • Extend the place value landscape further by examining video of children at work on activities from The T-Shirt Factory unit, grades 2-3.
  • Construct a landscape of learning comprised of big ideas, strategies, and models for early place value from early counting through expanded notation to 1000.
  • Explore the importance of developing the five and ten structures with the MathrackTM.
  • Take home a CFLM grade level unit of their choice.
This workshop will involve participants in the use of P2S2: a personalized professional support systemTM.  A few days before the workshop begins, participants will receive a link to use to get a password.  Just prior and during the workshop, participants will have access to the online platform to study videos of grades K-6 teachers and children involved in exploring place value.  Short assignments around the video clips will be given to prepare people for the workshop and to allow for differentiated grade level activities during the workshop.  Participants will also receive a signed copy of one of Cathy Fosnot's CFLM Place Value units of their choice.

Event Date(s) May 10, 2018 - May 11, 2018
The development of a deep understanding of place value is a long journey for children, beginning with the noticing of patterns in the number system as they count and group quantities, to the discovery that the place of the numeral implies its worth, to additive decomposition using expanded notation, to working with decimals and eventually developing an understanding of the multiplicative nature and ultimate beauty of our place value number system.

In Part Two participants will:
  • Explore the shift from decomposition strategies based on additive structuring (expanded notation) to multiplicative structuring where digits represent multiples of ten.
  • Engage in video analysis of children at work on the investigations in the CFLM unit Muffles' Truffles, grades 3-4 as they examine patterns that occur when dividing or multiplying by ten.
  • Engage in video analysis of children at work on the investigations in The Teachers' Lounge, grades 4-5 as place value is used in efficient computation strategies for multiplication and division.
  • Extend the place value landscape further to include decimal understanding by examining video of children at work on activities from Mystery of the Meter, grades 5-6.
  • Construct a landscape of learning comprised of big ideas, strategies, and models for place value from early multiplication to an understanding of powers of ten, exponents, and scientific notation.
  • Explore the importance of developing a multiplicative understanding of the base system (in contrast to just expanded notation).
  • Learn how to design and use strings of related problems in mini-lessons to develop fluent computation for multiplication and division, including the use of scientific notation.
  • Take home a CFLM grade level unit of their choice.
This workshop will involve participants in the use of P2S2: a personalized professional support systemTM.  A few days before the workshop begins, participants will receive a link to use to get a password.  Just prior and during the workshop, participants will have access to the online platform to study videos of grades 4-8 teachers and children involved in exploring place value.  Short assignments around the video clips will be given to prepare people for the workshop and to allow for differentiated grade level activities during the workshop.  Participants will also receive a signed copy of one of Cathy Fosnot's CFLM Place Value units of their choice.
