Alternative Education Network

The Alternative Education Administrators Learning Network will meet six times a year to share research-based strategies for increasing student engagement, increasing rigor in the classroom, increasing focus on college/career preparation, and to discuss other key challenges that students in alternative education settings often experience. The network will incorporate strategies such as professional development opportunities on increasing FAFSA/Dream Act submissions, assisting with post-baccalaureate matriculation into college/educational institutions, and the integration of FAFSA/Dream Act completion into the school program. There will be a focus on sharing best practices by schools that have received Model Continuation School Awards. Opportunities to participate in “Walk to Lead” learning walks will be provided to network participants.

The Equity Team Institute, facilitated by Carolyn Kaneda, is designed to support school and district teams with the design and implementation of plans that address equity issues that can impact Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) goal outcomes.

Teams will deepen their understanding and develop skills and strategies needed to support students from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. During each session, a dedicated time will be provided for teams to develop a site specific plan of action that addresses a self-identified equity problem of practice.

The institute will build upon the foundation concepts to increasing equitable learning opportunities for students:

  • A Coherent Instructional Guidance System
  • Ongoing Developmental of the Professional Capacity of Staff
  • Culturally Responsive Instruction
  • Student-Centered Learning Environments
  • Strong Parent-Community School Connection

Developing a Restorative and Strengths-Based Approach Part 2

This workshop continues where Part 1 leaves off.  After a brief review of core content in Part 1, we will dive deeper into what it means to be both restorative and strengths-based as well as develop two additional practices:  reintegrative shaming and circles. Participants will leave this session with a strong understanding and powerful framework for building community, connection and holding others accountable.

Online Learning Leaders Network Meeting

Join us for our Online Learning Leaders Network meeting from 9 am to 12 pm on Monday, May 21, 2018. This network is specifically designed to discuss, share, and collaborate on concerns specific to the online learning environment. This includes problems and successes surrounding pedagogy, teacher training, student motivation, tools, and communication with parents and other stakeholders that influence teaching and learning online. This meeting will be held at the Hybrid School of Innovation located on the campus of John F. Kennedy Middle College High School located at 1951 Third St. Norco, CA 92860. Teachers, coaches, and administrators are welcome to attend.

The Riverside County Assessment Network (RCAN) Meetings are designed to:  (1) provide a forum to discuss what is happening in educational assessment - what's new, what's going on, what works, and what does not work, (2) offer timely updates on legislative, budget, and accountability at the state and federal level, and (3) share and explore promising practices that can inform instruction and assessment, accelerate student learning, close achievement gaps, increase high school graduation rates, and improve college and career readiness.

The purpose of the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS) Network is to promote communication and collaboration between districts.  These meetings offer an update on CALPADS and sharing of best practices in the districts.  In addition, participants will learn about professional development opportunities and resources related to CALPADS, California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), California School Dashboard, Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) and Student Information System (SIS).

Circles: A Powerful Way to Connect and Heal Our Community

Facilitated by Dr. Abdul-Malik Muhammad this workshop demonstrates using circles beyond facilitating conversation and encouraging full participation. This strategy is optimized and participants learn to utilize the circle process to promote truly meaningful communication. Through video, practice, discussion and interactive activities, participants will identify effective methods for using proactive and responsive circles to build community, establish norms and address behavior and relationships. Useful in any setting from education and human services to organizational management.

The next steps for individuals who have already attended an Information Meeting is to attend an Advisement Meeting. Potential candidates must attend an Advisement Meeting before moving on to Step Three: Pre-Service.

The Middle School Principal Network is open to middle school principals two times a year. These network meetings provide the forum for middle school administrators to meet with other like-minded principals from around the county. At the network meetings, participants will receive updates pertaining to new legislation/policy updates relating to middle schools; hear about county-wide initiatives specific to middle schools; and learn new approaches/strategies that are yielding powerful results at Riverside County middle school schools. Participants will be able to engage in collaborative conversations with other middle school principals and develop informal networks of support in which to exchange best practices and ideas.

Long-Term English Learner (LTEL) Focus Group and Task Force Meetings

The Long-Term English Learner (LTEL) Focus Group and Task Force will hold five meetings this year during which leadership, legislation, research, and best practices are presented to assist long-term English learners, those who have been enrolled in U.S. schools for six years or more who have not yet reached English proficiency as measured by the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). The mission of the LTEL Task Force is to identify sustainable systems from the county level to the classroom that support best practices in meeting linguistic and academic needs of ELs, LTELs, and RTELs to prepare them for graduation from high school well prepared for college and the workforce.

Project and English Learner Directors (PELD) Meetings 2017-2018

These meetings are for district-level categorical, project and English learner directors and coordinators who oversee federal and state education projects including services for English learners (ELs).  Directors and specialists will share expertise about federal and state programs and legislation, funding, regulations, assessment and accountability, Federal Program Monitoring (FPM), and Title III monitoring.  Topics for discussion include state and federal accountability and continuous system, alignment of state and federal plans and programs, and support for student groups with a specific focus on English learners.

High School Principal Learning Network

(6 Day Event) Sep 29, 2017 - May 25, 2018
The High School Principal Network will meet six times during the school year, with the goal being to share best practices, increase all metrics related to the 8 State Priority areas, with an emphasis on college/career readiness.  The principals will be encouraged to bring up to two key leaders on their campuses to the network meetings.  Participating principals will be also engaged in learning walks on each other’s campuses.  Specific goals include increasing the percentage of students applying to three or more colleges, increasing the percentage of FAFSA/Dream Act completions from 64% to 93% through school years 18-19, increasing the percentage of students enrolling in postsecondary education from 52% to 65%, and decreasing the amount of students needing remediation upon entering college. To increase college access, the network will incorporate strategies such as professional development opportunities for high school counselors on FAFSA/Dream Act preparation and completion, and the integration of FAFSA/Dream Act completion into school curriculum.
